Innovate By Day provides a tandem interactive training session for middle school and high school students and their parents that provides training and tools to address online safety in the social media sphere.
Take-away packages aligning with Ontario Curriculum standards are provided to teachers after the session.
Social Media Literacy
This unit offers students the opportunity to explore how their social media behaviours can affect their lives and reputations. Students will be asked to reflect on what they post, comments they leave on others’ pages, and how they behave in online spaces (online games, text messaging, group chats, FaceTime etc.) A focus is placed on their online reputation and the lasting effects what they post online can have.
This portion of the training also covers privacy settings as well as current terms and concepts such as FOMO (Fear of Missing Out).
This unit covers the effects of cyberbullying and how to report it. Students will be asked to consider the difference between online and offline communications and discuss how these differences may affect the words and actions of others online. Students will identify strategies for mitigating these aspects of online communication and discuss how to participate in positive online engagement.
Parent and Guardian Training
Innovate By Day also offers a “Kids and Social Media” session for parents and guardians, which covers the pitfalls a teen faces while navigating social media in the world of Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and messaging apps. What parents need to know, what students need to know, and how parents can guide their children to make smart choices online.
