Stumbling Upon New Content
What is StumbleUpon?
StumbleUpon is a browser extension and mobile app that finds and recommends web content to its users. Some 35 million Stumblers are able to discover and rate more than 200 million Web pages, photos, and videos that are personalized to their tastes and interests. Users can also build a network of friends with whom they can send and receive content.
How Do StumbleUpon Ads Work?
Businesses can add their pages to StumbleUpon for free or do a paid ad campaign that targets specific demographics or interests for very reasonable rates. StumbleUpon ads are different from other social media advertising platforms, in that they don’t use traditional ad units such as banners or text links. Users are driven directly to the page when they click the Stumble button. StumbleUpon traffic can be extremely valuable for building brand awareness, growing followers, and getting page views. If your content is engaging and people genuinely like what they see, you will receive tons of earned traffic, reducing your cost per visit to fractions of a cent. If companies like Red Bull, Nike, and HBO are doing it, there must be something to it.
What Types of Content Work Best?
The content, above all, should be easily interpreted just by scanning the page. For articles and blog posts, this usually means using some bolded copy, sub-headings, images and bullet points. Videos also tend to do well, but they should be relatively short. It’s very easy for users to simply hit the stumble button and move on to the next thing, so it’s good to assume that everyone has the attention span of a 3-year-old. It should also be noted that although all the major social media sites have unique communities with varying tastes, if something takes off on Reddit or Digg, it is virtually guaranteed to take off on StumbleUpon as well.
Innovate By Day will be experimenting with this in weeks to come, and we are very excited and optimistic about the potential results. We will be sure to report our findings back to you so stay tuned for updates.
