Trendwatch 006: For Paris, and the World

In Blog, Community Building, Podcast, Social Media, World

In light of recent events in Paris, Beirut, and other locations, the team at IBD discusses how social media’s role is changing in the midst of catastrophe, from check-ins on Facebook to the way news is shared on Twitter, to the way it helps Syrian Refugees communicate and stay safe. We talk about Crisis FOMO, Morality Memes, and a whole lot more.

Terms Coined:

  • Crisis FOMO – The reaction people have to not being part of the discussion surrounding an emergency. Agency is gained by becoming a relay.
  • Morality Memes – Images which associate sharing them with moral acts, such as “Share this or you don’t care about ______” or “Share this if you care about ________”.
